OMAHOPS MONTHLY NEWS – MAY 2015
Big Brew for Spring 2015 was held at Kent Porter's home on Saturday May 9. Although the weather was forecast to be threatening it turned out to be a beautiful spring day.

Here is the Oktoberfest recipe that we brewed:

8.5 lb          Carapils (Dextrine Malt) (US)   4 %
8.5 lb         Caramel/Crystal 120L (US)       4 %

Amount     Hop                              Time     Use    Form    AA

8.5 oz      Hallertauer Mittelfrüh (DE)   5 min    Boil  Pelle  t 4.2%

Our OG was 1.056 after a 90 min boil.  Let's plan to bring a bottle or two to share at the Fall 2015 Brew Brew, it will be an opportunity to discuss the different yeasts and processes that were used and compare techniques and final brews.

There was a ton of great food that was served up: ribs, sloppy joes, exotic cheeses, smoked pork dip, along with numerous homebrews and commercial beers for taste testing. The club also held a memorial toast to a recently departed member, Mike.

It was an incredible day, and cheers to Kent for hosting another memorable big brew meeting.

Omahops will be participating in the Benson Beerfest on May 30. Tom Hawks is helping to coordinate the club's participation in this community event; we hope to serve as many as five or six different homebrews produced by club members.

Jose has volunteered to coordinate and lead the sensory tastings event in June. This event is tentatively scheduled for June 17, 7:30PM, and will be the evaluation of a variety of malt or hop teas to better understand the flavor profiles of different malting processes and brands or different hop varities. The meeting is at Jose's home, 603 Matthies Drive, Papillion,NE

Jason has volunteered to coordinate and lead the mini-mash, along with assistance from Chris Masek. We will be changing the date of this event to Saturday September 19. We will need to find a location for this event so if you wish to offer up ideas, please contact Jason.

OMAHOPS MONTHLY NEWS – APRIL 2015
Omahops members gathered for a meeting Wednesday April 22 at Elliott's home-- thanks Elliott for putting this together at the last minute and serving brats and munchies.
Beer tastings were conducted for entries into the Nebraska shootout which is this weekend in Lincoln. The club will be represented well, with entries from Tom, Elliott, Wayne, Sam, and Jason; there will be entries in each category – which is pretty exciting. Elliott will be driving the beers to Lincoln, Wayne will be participating as a judge.
The Spring Big Brew is coming up quickly, keep May 9th on your calendar.  Kent will be hosting this again. Maps to Kent's place are on the website.
Hawk is coordinating the Benson Beerfest; if you have beer to share let him know-- soon. The event schedule is Saturday May 30, 2015 from 3pm – 7pm. Elliott will be getting a loaner jockey box so it should be a great event. The event is to further the appreciation of craft beer and homebrewing and for clubs to showcase their skills; it is a not-for-profit event.
Jose has volunteered to coordinate and lead the sensory tastings. This event is tentatively scheduled for June 24, and will be the evaluation of a variety of malt teas to better understand the flavor profiles of different malting processes and brands.
Jason has volunteered to coordinate and lead the mini-mash. We will be changing the date of this event to Saturday September 19. We will need to find a location for this event so if you wish to offer up ideas, please contact Jason.

OMAHOPS MONTHLY NEWS – MARCH 2015

We had a great meeting on  the 25th at Damian's home.  Thanks Damian, for hosting, for sharing your great home, and for providing the tasty chili !!

Chris had an agenda and we discussed many of the items the club hopes to proceed on this year.  The club meetings and events will require some coordination, so all members are urged to pick something of interest and pitch in.

BIG BREW: It was decided that Spring Big Brew will include about 8-9% melanoidin to better approximate a decoction mash.

EDUCATION: We discussed some additional educational activites.  This would include club members sharing their knowledge and techniques, and hooking up with local professional brewers to get their ideas and best processes.

LOCAL EVENTS: We discussed participating in local homebrew events.  The events tentatively selected are listed in the calendar below.  Each event will require a volunteer to help lead the coordination.  We discussed building a jockey box; Elliott said he could borrow one from the Moon, so we will take that route.  Members approved the purchase of a new banner with the club logo for use at these events, with a budget of around $50.

BJCP EXAM: There is interest in a study group for the BJCP exam in January 2016.

There were some commercial beers sampled, several funky ones from Damian including pretzel wheat, chocolate, vanilla and bourbon.  Damian also had some good homebrew, a honey brown and wheat.  Sam had a nice wee heavy, Chip had a Pliny the toddler session IPA and a Pete's pilsner, Elliot and Dave had some beers from a previous Big Brew and a nice lager, Floyd had a milk stout and a kolsch big brew, Duane had a CAP and a belgian pale (I think I got these all right and apologize if I missed or scrambled something)

MARCH 2014  meeting notes

Meeting notes for OmaHops Homebrew Club 3-28-14

A group of us met at Elliott Spilker's home for our March meeting last Friday night.  If you weren't there, you missed some great made-from-scratch sloppy Joe's Elliott concocted.  He also pulled out his kegs of Dmitri's Revenge and last Spring's Big Brew.  Kent shared his Kolsch and  Fall Big Brew Porter.  Chris Masek brought his Coconut Porter, Alaskan Amber clone and a Helles.  Damian provided a cider.  Brian poured his Big Brew Porter fermented as a lager.   Tom shared his combinations of beer and whisky with a Scotch Scotch Ale and a Scotch Porter.  We also had a chance to sample Elliott's experimental liqueurs.

We made an executive decision to brew a Kolsch for the Spring Big Brew, using German Pilsner and Vienna malts with Magnum and Hallertauer hops.  <masher/worttaker>. We also agreed on the standard club fee.  The grain for the Fall Big Brew will be purchased in the Fall if necessary.

We will have a table at the Benson Beerfest on Saturday June 7.  We need at least four brewers to provide 5 gallons each of homebrew.  Craig Bates volunteered on the Facebook page, Tom Hawk also volunteered and Elliott can provide a keg, as will Chris Miller who will also bring the OmaHops banner.  We don't have to stop at four if others would like to volunteer or several people could provide bottles of quality homebrew.  Also, we should have a whiteboard or a chalkboard to list the beers we will be serving.

Here's the latest update on brewers for the 12 Beers of Christmas. Let's plan on exchanging at the Fall Big Brew.

Steve Freeman- Caramel Quad and Juniper Rye Bock
Duane Miller- Spiced Cherry Dubbel
Kent Porter- Spiced Dunkel Weizenbock
Chris Miller-Fruitcake Old Ale
Sam- Saffron Tripel
Jose- Honey Ginger IPA
Brian- Gingerbread Ale
Chris Masek- Spiced Bourbon Stout
Damian- Abbey Weizen
Floyd- St. Arnold's Christmas Ale

We still need one more to make 12, we could go over. The remaining beers from 2 Mosher articles include: Christmas Gruit, Crabapple Lambicky Ale, Pumpkin Barleywine, Cocoa Export Porter, Dark White Beer.

Next month’s meeting will be the Spring Big Brew at Kent Porter's home, beginning at noon on April 26.
